Phenotypeca Ltd is a synthetic biology company combining yeast genomics technology with manufacturing expertise from the biopharmaceutical industry. Founded in 2018, Phenotypeca’s R&D operations are based in the Biodiscovery Institute’s Synthetic Biology Research Centre, University of Nottingham.
We use advance breeding of genetically diverse yeast to produce up to a billion novel strains for high-throughput screening. From these we select production strains with optimal phenotypes for future biomanufacturing processes. We are currently working on 3 research directions:
1. to optimise biologics production processes for cost reduction of vaccine production;
2. to develop yeast strains for the production of SARS-CoV-2 antigens to detect who has had COVID-19 in the UK population
3. developing next-generation baker’s yeast production strains for a coating for dialysis membranes.
These will be capable of preventing, at source, the blood’s foreign body reactions, and therefore improving long-term dialysis outcomes for patients.
